Setting
up the GoToMyPC remote PC access software
Other remote control software require that you
install the software on both the home and travelling PC, not very
helpful when you suddenly need to download a file from the other side
of the world. They are also harder to set up and more problematic where
a firewall is involved. GoToMyPC can reach PCs behind a firewall
without having to make changes to the firewall.
Setting up this software is extremely easy. For the purposes of this
explanation a distinction is made between the host and the remote
computer. The host has the information you want to access, normally a
personal computer or a server at the office. The remote computer is the
one at which you need the information, it can be any computer connected
to the Internet.
To do the set-up you
go to your host computer, browse to the GoToMyPC web, create an account
on the site (email and password) and download approximately 2M of code.
You only have to prepare the host machine in advance. No preparation
for the remote computer is required.
To access
the host from another computer, browse to the GoToMyPC site and enter
your e-mail address and password. A small file of software downloads
and installs itself and a list of available hosts appears. Click the
one you want and enter the access code you've established for the
particular host.
A window showing the
host's screen will appear on the remote PC and as long as this window
has the focus you can work on the host as if you are sitting in front
of it. The big plus here being that you do not need to make any
installation on the remote computer. This is very useful for mobile
workers. Amongst other available functions you can cut and paste
between the host and remote windows and print documents from the host
on any printer available to the remote computer. You will find the
whole environment to be very stable.
Broadband
or dial-up remote access
Use
your fast broadband connection to remotely control software programs on
your office PC or any other distant computer. GoToMyPC will also work
